Barnstable is the largest town on Cape Cod by both area and population, and it is really seven villages that happen to share a town hall. A driveway in Hyannis and a driveway in Cotuit have almost nothing in common except the material we put on top of them.

The commercial center of the Cape. Busy roads, mixed property types, and plenty of driveways that take far more traffic than a residential driveway normally does.

The one that catches people out
Hyannis driveways take a beating that residential driveways elsewhere never see. If a property is rented out, has a business attached, or simply sits where several cars turn in and out every day, a standard three inch shell surface over a light base will not hold for as long as it would in Cotuit.
The fix is not more shell. It is a deeper, better compacted base under it, and honest edging so the material cannot escape sideways under repeated turning. Tell us how the driveway is actually used when you call and we will build for that rather than for the average.
Ground conditions
Most of the town sits on the Barnstable outwash plain, which is sand and gravel sorted and dropped by glacial meltwater. It drains freely, digs easily and gives you very little to build on until it is properly compacted.
The exception is the northern edge. Up toward West Barnstable and Sandy Neck you run into moraine ground, and that is stonier, mixed with clay in places, and slower to excavate. It is worth knowing which of the two your driveway is on before anybody quotes a price for digging it out.

Barnstable covers more ground than any other town here, and Hyannis moves more vehicles than anywhere else on the Cape. That matters for a driveway surface more than most people expect.
A driveway used by one or two cars behaves very differently from one that sees half a dozen movements a day. On the quieter village streets in Cotuit, Osterville or West Barnstable, crushed shell holds up well and looks right against the older houses. On a driveway in constant use, three quarter inch stone takes the turning and the weight without needing pulling back into shape as often.
