Two towns in one
Falmouth is big, and it is not one kind of place. The village center and Woods Hole are dense, old and tight, with driveways measured in feet rather than yards and neighbors close enough that where the truck parks matters. Inland toward Hatchville and East Falmouth the lots open up and the driveways get long.
Those two halves need different work. A short village driveway is mostly edging and finish, because every inch of it is seen from the street. A long inland driveway is mostly base and drainage, because nobody sees the middle of it but everybody drives on it.
What the glacier left here
The Buzzards Bay Moraine runs down the western side of Falmouth, and the outwash plain spreads east and south of it. Falmouth is one of the few places you can cross from one to the other in a short drive, and the ground changes underneath you when you do.
West and north, expect till: firmer, stonier, slower to dig, and more likely to hold water in pockets. South and east, expect outwash sand: easy to dig, drains almost too well, and offers very little bearing on its own until a base is compacted onto it.

- Woods Hole
- Tight, historic and busy with institution traffic. Access and timing matter more than the driveway itself.
- Falmouth Village
- Short driveways close to the street, where the edge detail is most of what people notice.
- East Falmouth and Teaticket
- Outwash sand, flatter lots, and driveways that want a proper base under them more than they want depth on top.
- North Falmouth and Hatchville
- Longer, more rural approaches, often wooded, often with a drainage question somewhere along their length.
- Waquoit
- Low and close to water in places, which makes pitch and run-off the first thing to look at.
Getting a driveway done in a summer town
Falmouth in July is not Falmouth in October. Ferry traffic to the Vineyard runs through the town all summer, and a job that takes a morning in spring can take most of a day in August simply because of the roads. If your driveway is not urgent, the shoulder seasons are easier on everyone and usually easier to schedule.

Falmouth is big enough that no single recommendation covers it.
The north west of town and the ground around Woods Hole sit on moraine, and the driveways there climb. East Falmouth, Teaticket and Waquoit are flat outwash plain by comparison.
So we give different answers within the same town, and it is not a sales position. On the hills, crushed stone. On the flats, crushed shell, which will look better and give less trouble. If you are somewhere between the two, that is worth a conversation rather than a guess.
