Crushed shell driveways in Mashpee

Mashpee sits on what geologists call the Mashpee pitted plain, an outwash plain laid down by meltwater running off the glacier and pocked with kettle holes where buried ice later melted out. It is about as different from the moraine towns to the north as ground on the Cape gets.

For a driveway, outwash sand is a mixed blessing. Water disappears through it, so you will rarely fight a puddle here. But clean sand has very little bearing strength of its own. Put shell straight onto it and the shell simply migrates down into the sand under the weight of a car, and within a couple of seasons you have a gray, sandy driveway with some shell in it.

That is why the section below matters more in Mashpee than the color of the material on top.

A lot of Mashpee is newer construction compared with the 6A towns, New Seabury and the developments around it especially. Newer usually means the driveway was graded properly when the house went up, which is good news: there is often a usable base under the surface already.

When that is the case a refresh is genuinely all you need. We regrade what is there, correct anywhere the water has started to sit, and lay fresh shell over the top. It costs less than a rebuild and lasts because the part that carries the weight was already done right.

The way to find out is to look. If someone quotes you a full excavation without checking what is underneath, they are guessing.

New Seabury, Popponesset, the area around Mashpee Commons, and the quieter roads out toward Johns Pond and the Wakeby side. Mashpee is also the home of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, whose presence here long predates every road on this map.
