Crushed shell driveways in West Barnstable
Settled in 1639 for the salt hay, and still the greenest part of the town.
English settlers came to West Barnstable in 1639 for the salt-hay meadows along what is now Barnstable Harbor, which fed cattle through winter without anyone having to clear forest for pasture. The Great Marshes are still there, and so is a lot of open land.
