Crushed shell driveways in Sagamore

Sagamore is split by the canal crossing and by its own geography. Inland it is sandy upland that drains freely. Toward Sagamore Beach the ground flattens into marsh and the rules change completely.
Two kinds of ground, one village
Very little on Cape Cod changes as fast over as short a distance.
On the higher sandy ground, a driveway is straightforward. Water disappears almost as fast as it lands, the base compacts well, and crushed shell looks and performs about as well as it does anywhere on the Cape.
Closer to the marsh, everything slows down. Ground that drains poorly will push a thin driveway around within a season, and it is the base depth rather than the surface that decides whether it holds.

Exposure this close to the water does very little to shell or stone themselves. Neither corrodes and neither fades in any way you would notice.
What exposure does affect is edging. Untreated timber near the marsh has a much shorter life than it does inland, which is worth knowing before choosing it over granite or steel.

On the sandy upland either surface performs, so the choice is yours. Closer to the marsh, crushed stone is the safer answer because it holds its shape on ground that drains slowly.
If your driveway pitches at all toward the water, that tips it further: angular stone resists the slow creep that a slope pulls out of shell.
